This is a concern I hear fairly often when speaking with fabricators. The fact that quartz material (engineered stone) can crack when being cut, or that it can actually bind shut so hard that it damages the saw blade, is not a new phenomenon. If you are fabricating ES, this is bound to happen to you sooner or later.
It does not matter what brand of material you are using, the stress that causes this problem is inherent in the manufacturing process. Quartz or Engineered Stone material is made under a tremendous amount of pressure and heat. The curing process is designed to relieve the stress in the material. The material should cool evenly so that the stress is released evenly throughout the slab. This is not always the case though. So if a slab cools unevenly, there could be varying rates of tension found in the slab.

A quick search at and you will see there are several threads that have been created surrounding this topic. At my old shop these were the top proactive measures we used to put into place. Here are a few suggestions you can try: 1) Dress your Blade.
Make sure the diamonds on your blade are exposed – The resin in the ES can coat your blade effectively killing the blades ability to cut while generating excess heat at the point where it is cutting. If the blade gets coated with resin you are effectively burning through the material not cutting it. 2) Watch your Amp Draw and Cut Speed. If your amp draw starts rising it could be caused by #1. You may need to dress your blade. You may also be cutting to fast. Know your saw amp draw parameters – it differs for 230v vs 460v configurations. 3) Know your Blade.
Use the right blade for your saw. Be sure and talk to your saws manufacturer to make sure you are using the best blade for this application. Saw blades are not universal. 4) ALWAYS cut from the OUTSIDE in.
Start your cut from the outside of the material and cut inwards. Lift your saw out when you need to stop. 5) Don’t Plunge.
Avoid plunge cutting whenever possible – See #2 6) Relief Cuts. If using a saw jet or water jet make relief cuts on areas that will have a radius or curve to help prevent a blowout. You can also core holes in the corner of “L” shape tops to prevent the chance of cracking. Cut from the outside into this core. 7) Use Shims. Insert shims behind the blade as you are cutting. This will help keep the material from closing up due to tension and pinching the blade.
You can also use shims to support the slab in any areas where it might have a slight warp to it. This will prevent it from “settling” and possibly cracking as it is cut. Make sure you are using plenty of water.
Do not dry cut the material as this will create excess heat. 9) Fissure and Crack Check. When you receive the slabs check them for fissures or cracks. At my old shop I encouraged my guys to wash over the slabs with hose water. This will help you see any cracks or fissures you may not have noticed before hand.
Call your manufacturer if you see cracks or fissures! Do not cut the slab! Check for flatness or warpage.
If the slab is warped it will begin to level out unevenly as you cut it. This can result in either a blowout or a pinched blade. Notify your manufacturer rep before you cut a warped slab. If the warp is slight you can use shims. However, if you feel the warp is significant, let your manufacture or distributor rep know to CYA.
