The fact that quartz material (engineered stone) can crack when being cut, or that it can actually bind shut so hard that it damages the saw blade, is not a new phenomenon. If you are fabricating ES, this is bound to happen to you sooner or later.

It does not matter what brand of material you are using, the stress that causes this problem is inherent in the manufacturing process. Quartz or Engineered Stone material is made under a tremendous amount of pressure and heat. The curing process is designed to relieve the stress in the material. The material should cool evenly so that the stress is released evenly throughout the slab. This is not always the case though. So if a slab cools unevenly, there could be varying rates of tension found in the slab.

This will help keep the material from closing up due to tension and pinching the blade.

You can also use shims to support the slab in any areas where it might have a slight warp to it. This will prevent it from “settling” and possibly cracking as it is cut. Make sure you are using plenty of water.

Do not dry cut the material as this will create excess heat. 9) Fissure and Crack Check. When you receive the slabs check them for fissures or cracks. At my old shop I encouraged my guys to wash over the slabs with hose water. This will help you see any cracks or fissures you may not have noticed before hand.

Call your manufacturer if you see cracks or fissures! Do not cut the slab! Check for flatness or warpage.

If the slab is warped it will begin to level out unevenly as you cut it. This can result in either a blowout or a pinched blade. Notify your manufacturer rep before you cut a warped slab. If the warp is slight you can use shims. However, if you feel the warp is significant, let your manufacture or distributor rep know to CYA.
